Vulcan, Birmingham Alabama’s colossal statue is the world’s largest cast iron statue and is considered as one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States. VULCAN REPRESENTS GROWING INDUSTRIAL ABILITIES
Since the Birmingham was founded in 1871, the city grew uniquely because its area contains coal, iron ore and limestone which are the raw materials for making iron and steel. Since then, Birmingham was called the “Magic City” because of its rapid growth. City leaders wished to advertise Birmingham and Alabama at the St. Louis World’s Fair and decided a statue of Vulcan would best highlight the magical city in its growing industrial abilities because Vulcan is the Roman god of fire and forge.

Vulcan stands fifty six feet tall, from toe to end of spearhead, upon a 124-foot pedestal rising to a height of a hundred and eighty feet and weighs one hundred and one thousand two hundred pounds. There is no doubt why Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world and the largest metal statue ever made in the United States.

VULCAN’S TORCH LIGHT IN HIS RIGHT ARM

Vulcan’s torch has nothing to do with the history of Birmingham’s industrial growth. The torch was decided to be placed in Vulcan’s right hand to serve as a temporary traffic safety campaign for few month. The red light signaled that there had been a traffic fatality in Birmingham; the green light was shone to demonstrate there had not been a fatality.
